T-Mobile Move Shows True Cost of Roaming
From October 26th 2009, T-Mobile UK annouced it would increase its non-EU roaming charges, taking the cost of a roamed minute to £1.20 from the current £0.55p rate.
As an example of the impact this has, The Sunday Times highlighted that a 30 minute USA to UK call that used to be £16.50 will now cost users a massive £36.00. Compare that to the FoneRent rate on AT&T at just £7.50 and clients can save the cost of renting (£29.00) in one call alone! FoneRent charge £29.00 per week including a Nokia Mobile, UK Delivery, itemised billing and insurance.
FoneRent have long advocated the need for transaprency on roaming as clients often don't know the real costs until it's too late. And T-Mobile aren't alone, all the UK carriers charge higher rates for roaming in non-EU destinations where current legislation cannot dictate pricing policies.
It really is amazing just what a premium roaming can command, especially in long-haul destinations - hence the success of our SIMSaver Products and Phone Rental. As an example, one of our London based Film Production clients recently took 6 phones to the USA for a shoot over 2 months and confirmed savings of 73% versus their UK roaming rates in the States. In real terms this was in excess of £1500.00 / $2500.00. Add to that the Roaming Data Charges for access to the web and email which can exceed £10.00 per MB and the costs really do add up to 'Bill Shock' after the event.
